What are the numbers for on golf balls?

The numbers are there to help you identify your ball on the golf course. In a dozen box, you get three each of four different numbers. If you should happen to play with someone using the same model of ball, you can agree in advance to play different numbers. That way, you can always tell which one is yours.

It's still a good idea to put your own personal mark on the ball using a permanent marker. That way, there will be no confusion even if someone else on the golf course is playing the same model and number as you are.
