I have found fitting very frustrating so far; My first experience resulted in the fitter saying I needed 'standard ' ie off the shelf with no changes, although he didn't even suggest checking the lie until I asked - and by chance he just happended to have a set of AP1s standard in stock with the shaft I liked - very convenient!..........so off to the club maker who said 3-4 flat! Having them shortened makes perfect sense but now I;m not sure how best to proceed. I tend to trust the club maker, purely on his reputation and testimonials (both European and Challenge tour players have used him) so I think I should go back to him & see what he suggests. Thanks again

RE: 3 or 4 Degree Flat? The longer the club, the harder to hit. I bet you'd get better much more quickly with shorter clubs. If you ever want them longer down the road, you can add extenders.

RE: 3 or 4 Degree Flat? Congratulations on the improvements that you're making in your golf game! Getting fit for golf clubs can be a bit confusing at times and it helps to have someone that you trust as a clubfitter, particularly if they are certified Titleist fitters that know the entire product line.

I will speak from my experience only - when I initially went for my fitting of AP2's (714 series), my fitting called for my clubs to be 3* degrees flat. However, I was advised by Titleist that the most that my AP2's could be adjusted would be 2* degrees flat.

I then spoke to both a local club maker (one who could actually bend, and make clubs, etc.) and to our regional Titleist rep. And they both advised that it could be adjusted a little more to accommodate the 3* degree lie that I needed, but that I should be advised that it would void my warranty if there problems (ie: hairline fractures, etc.).

When I inquired as to why this was the case (about the lie adjustment being a maximum of 2* degrees), I was informed by both that it was because of the different steel used in the manufacturing of these clubs. I was further advised that this would be even more so with the AP1's as they were a cast club and not forged like the AP2's.

My club maker thought that I could probably get away with an extra degree of lie adjustment, simply because of the quality of the clubs but, that I had to be prepared to accept the consequences if they cracked, etc. and that Titleist would have issues with it as well -- so I left mine at the 2* degrees of lie adjustment. I've adjusted to the clubs somewhat - though my next set of irons will definitely be a combination involving the MB's!

I then asked both the Regional Titleist rep and the local club maker about the 714 CB and the MB lines, and again they both stated to me that I should be able to have those adjusted more because they both used a different steel in their construction than the AP1 & AP2 - a steel that allowed for more "bend" to accommodate the 3-4* degrees of lie adjustment.

Perhaps someone from Titleist will be able to shed more information RW!
