Practice vs Playing

Interested to learn how often you all practice (swing mechanics and chipping) versus playing the course.

Last year I committed to playing the course much more rather than range sessions. I feel it helped my game because it gave me real game scenarios rather than plunking balls down range endlessly.

Let’s hear your logic?

A bit of both. The majority of my practice is done at the short game area and the putting green. I do try to get out as a single on times where the course is under utilized. It is at these times I get in my on course practice..

LBorders - great topic here and I’ve really enjoyed reading your own and others’ opinions on this. As a PGA Pro, I spend quite a bit of time with golfers who are passionate about working on their game. Unfortunately, I believe that too many of them are stuck on the range rather than getting out to play. I encourage everyone I teach to play first - and then spend time on the range working on what went wrong. Additionally, playing lessons have proven to be instant game-changers for my students due to the exposure of real shots.

Driver Swing

Is it worth changing your entire swing on your driver or adapting to what you got? I’ve had a mean slice the last few months after “figuring it out” right before. Thanks

Austin I hope you have playing well. I wanted to impart some wisdom that I use and tell my kids for playing golf as well as all sports or whatever activity they are participating in. If you can accept the results before they happen good bad or indifferent it will allow you to play more freely. The idea with that thought process is if you hit a bad shot you have already accepted it and can move on quicker and start thinking about your next shot. As all golfers know anything can happen and the next shot could be great. As the great Harry Varden said. “3 bad shots and one good shot still makes par”. Good luck hope this helps.

Mental Aspect of the Game

I have set a goal for myself of qualifying for a USGA sanctioned event by the time that I am 35 (I turned 30 this past October). The last time I played in an actual competitive round was my qualifier for the Texas Golf Association Mid-Am in 2022 and before that it would have been when I was in high school. I shot a 77 (par 72) for my practice round four days before. Morning of, I was feeling great and hitting great on the range. The minute I stepped up to the first tee I was like a deer in headlights and felt like I had never swung a golf club before. It was so bad I opted for a No Card. What tips and advice do you have on managing the mental aspect of the game and maintaining confidence from the work you've put in leading up to that moment?

Might not have to change the entire swing but might just have to learn and adapt with it, other options might be to tinker with the shaft and head of your driver

A visit with a teaching pro could solve your problem in a few minutes. A few minor changes. Worth the bucks to play better and hit it in the middle of the fairway.

I Struggle with over the top pulls when my swing gets too fast.

Hi Jalil! You may not have to change your entire swing but rather practice drills that will teach you to initiate the downswing with your lower body and attack the ball from an inside path. Here is a video from instructor Jonathan Yarwood where he explains how the slice occurs and offers a helpful drill to fix it:

Putt with eyeline directly over the inside edge of the ball, find grip that reduces wrist movement and focus on shoulder, back, and core activation.

Also tempo. Practice with a metronome or rhythmic beep/noise that you can follow along to and work on keeping your stroke at a consistent tempo

I feel a proper swing can transfer to more clubs then a custom swing to one individual club. If that makes sense.

Hello! I’m a 7 handicap high school golfer, I’m at the point in my game where I can get around a golf course from the back and play decent golf. But I feel like speed is holding me back, I don’t hit the ball anywhere. The last practice session on a launch monitor told me my driver averaged about 145-150 mph ball speed and mid to upper 90s mph club head speed (Some in the low 100s), with an average carry of 210 yards and with average total of 244. I feel like if I could pick up some speed I would be able to score better especially some of the longer courses in my area. Does anyone have any advice on how to get faster with the driver? Or is an efficiency issue? Thanks, Boone.

Keep the putter head low on both the takeaway and the follow-through. Target the back of the cup.

Have you checked to see what your launch angle is, and maybe what your spin level is? Both will rob you of distance if they are excessive over your optimum windows for those parameters.

Mats vs grass

Very frustrated with my local ranges using mats, the bounce I get really doesn’t allow me to gauge how well I’m really swinging. It often makes me take bigger divots/hit the ball far out on the course. I have taken the approach to not even warm up before a round at the range in order to play better. Anyone else taking this approach?

This is such an underrated drill at the range !
