Looking to get into single figure handicap and in line for a new set of irons. Have heard great things about both CB and AP2 models. Pros/cons of each?

I'm a 1 with pretty high swing speed for a 50 year old. For ME, I hit the CB's VERY high, spin rate was significantly higher. I got a much lower ball flight with less spin with the AP2's, and almost a club longer.......They are both great irons!!.......

I play off 11, I just changed fro 714AP2 to 716CB. For me, they play very similar, which is what I really liked about the CB, the newer AP2 went the same difference, but higher. I'm only 5 foot 5 and 47 years old, you really need to get proper fitting and see how you fell with each, good luck.

I am a 5. Both the CB and AP2 are great clubs. I was just recently fitted by a Titleist fitting professional and got the CB's at the AMT S300 shafts. For me the ball flight was higher and a consistent little 2 yard draw. Personally I love the looks of the CB over the AP2. Your best bet would be to see a fitting professional and hit everything. Good luck.
  6. I'm a 9 and recently tried both at a Titleist Thursday event. I personally had more success with the AP2s (more giving and about 5-10 yards longer), but both have a great feel to the them. My recommendation: get with your local fitter and try both and see what looks/performs/feels best to you. Either way can't go wrong in my opinion.

hopefully you are getting fitted for the new clubs and can try and compare them side by side. My iron fitting at Manchester Lane was very insightful helping me decide based on trackman numbers as well as feedback. I too went with the 714 AP2 and could not be happier. although there is the new 716...

Congratulations on your golf progress! After several years, some 15 years away from the game, I finally got back into it a few years back and have had a similar progression like yourself. I am now back into single digit handicap where I once was and it was a couple of years back where I considered the same things as you in terms of getting a new set of irons.

IMHO, irons are probably very "specific" or one of heavy personal preference for players. Some players prefer the top line look down at the club and how it frames the ball. Others place greater emphasis on the forgiveness, and others yet, prefer their ability to shape shots with specific irons.

I would strongly encourage you to go and do a full fitting to see if there is a preferred club and shaft combination that best fits you and your golf goals. This website has a section on the irons that provides some details on the 716 AP2 and CB's.

I went down the route of getting fitted for my AP2's (714) a few years back and have loved it. There is some more forgiveness designed into the AP2's vs. CB's, but the 716 CBs has more tungsten in it on the longer irons to help with the forgiveness of the clubs.

I have tried the 716 versions of these irons and if I was to purchase right now, I would do a blended set of T-MB long irons with MB's for the mid-short irons! Regardless, I don't think you can go wrong at all with either (716 AP2/CBs) and that it really comes down to your own set of personal preferences.

As such, would like to hear your thought process as to which option you went with and your experience in the decision making process!
  9. Just got a new set of 716CB irons and love them. Tried and tested 716 AP1 & AP2 and while both were slightly longer (10yds + or so with each) the feel of strike and consistency of distance & dispersion with the CB's was fantastic. Tested them over several months to make sure I was buying the best for my game and haven't been dissapointed yet. TT XP90 R300 Shaft, 2Deg Flat, 1/2" Short with +2 Tape on the grips. Just for info, I play off a handicap of 15 on a Scottish Championship Course and aim to get to single figures with these clubs.
  10. I'm an 8 and I just recently bought the 714 cb and tested it against the AP2. Both tested well with good feel. For me it came down to sight lines and the cb with a smaller head made me more comfortable at address. Also, the smaller head size forces me to really strike the ball in the sweet spot. Unfortunate thing is with a blade style club, when you hit a bad shot, you really know it but on the flip side, when you hit it pure, it is one of the best sounds, flight, and feeling you're going to have with a club.

I play the ap2 also. They're very easy to hit and very accurate. The CBs are easier to control shot shape and trajectory. They're also a tad easier from thick rough. I love my ap2s because they're very easy to hit and consistent.

Pro/Con are the topline look at address, the slight difference in forgiveness (vs. feel and feedback), and the lower/higher ball flight.

I am a big fan of the CBs, having had both. I found the AP2 harder to work left-to-right, and didn't like the somewhat 'numb' feel at impact. I also like the lower ball-flight of the CBs.

I agree with everyone else, that getting FIT is crucial, but if I were you, I would zero in on the CBs, and go from there.
