I found some AP3s at an excellent price online. This will be an uprade from the DCI oversize + that I have played since 2000! Stiff shafts. 9-10 handicap golfer. I imagine the clubs are listed at such a low price because they are 1 degree flat. AMT Black s300 shafts.

I'm wondering 1) If I'll really notice that 1 degree difference all that much, considering the move from these very old irons to the much newer AP3 and 2) if they don't feel quite right, I can just take them over to my PGA Superstore and have them bent back to zero, right?

Thanks for any thoughts on this. And if I had the resources to get a fitting and buy the perfect set of new irons tailored to my exact swing and needs, I would. But that's just not in the cards.

In theory you should be able to have them bent +/- 2 degrees. Not sure if they were factory heads at -1, but in that case you could go to -1/+3. I believe that Titleist recommends 2 degrees max.

You'd be surprised how much 1 degree can make - especially with the longer clubs. My divots went from toe-diggers to uniform by getting my 1.5 degree bend. Give them a whirl if they are a great price - you'll either love them or hate them!

Lie can be adjusted +/- 2 degrees from the original lie. In your case, might have been the -2 or zero lie heads (relative to the stock lie for that iron).

If the shaft works for you, buy and take it to a shop if you find the -1 lie doesn’t work for you.

Very easy and inexpensive to have them bent if you don’t like them flat.

Jeff, the AP3s were a fantastic set of irons. But keep in mind that they are several generations old. I get the cost and respect that - just wanted to make that point.

as for the AP3s, I'd talk with the fitters at the Superstore to be sure. Also, have these clubs seen much usage? or are they leftovers?

regardless, I know that you will appreciate the newer technology.

If you haven't been fit recently, I'd say a club within 1 degree of standard isn't a bad move. However, you're talking a 20 year upgrade so I'd grab them, then get your lie angle checked. You can check yourself with a piece of electrical tape on the sole of your 7-iron, etc. Probably a good move since you're a good player.

First, with respect, we are Titleist loyalists, like yourself. To answer your question someone qualified, a fitter would need to look at you swing, using Trackman, to see if you need flat/upright/zero. You do need to take them to a fitter to see how they perform to your specific swing and get the numbers to make that decision. But if resources are an issue, you might find someone at PGASS who might give you some advice on a set up with those irons. You can always ask. Hopefully they are have experience and are not just a salesperson. I am sure they will bend them whatever you want for a price. Normally about $5+ per a club. I would not know for sure because I do not shop at big box stores, I use a local in my city who is a Titleist account/fitter/repair shop.
  8. The closer to the pin, the more you will notice. That 1 degree gave you the same loft on the more forgiving AP1's though, but you still get the traditional and compact profile of the AP3. IMO it's probably the exact set I would choose if not going AP2. Yes, you can have them adjusted back to default.

You are bridging closer to the likes of the AP1, whereas at default the AP3 are the middle between the AP2, theoretically.

I think you will appreciate them, especially this the S300 shafts.

Keep the old clubs until you're sure of the new ones, that's what I always do.

Hope this helped you a little!

As a former AP3 owner, these heads are hard cast (vs forged like MB/CB) and can be difficult to bend - loft and/or lie. I took mine to a golf store (like PGA SS) and they said I had to sign a waiver of 'no fault' in case they cracked while bending. I eventually found a private shop who said specifically the AP3s should be adjusted by an experienced person only. He was able to adjust them just fine.

So not to say it can't be done but be mindful of who does the work.

Coming from DCI (softer) and the dynamics of your swing, you may not notice 1 degree flat and/or appreciate the feel vs a standard or upright lie angle.

Good luck and enjoy the journey!
