  1. Hello! I’m a 7 handicap high school golfer, I’m at the point in my game where I can get around a golf course from the back and play decent golf. But I feel like speed is holding me back, I don’t hit the ball anywhere. The last practice session on a launch monitor told me my driver averaged about 145-150 mph ball speed and mid to upper 90s mph club head speed (Some in the low 100s), with an average carry of 210 yards and with average total of 244. I feel like if I could pick up some speed I would be able to score better especially some of the longer courses in my area. Does anyone have any advice on how to get faster with the driver? Or is an efficiency issue? Thanks, Boone.

Boone, are you working with an instructor? That would be my first suggestion. If you don't have an instructor, it's time to look for one, and only one. That means you should do some interviews of teachers in your area. PGA pros are a good start but not the only source of instruction. Ask around to get some leads, then conduct your own interviews. Explain to potential instructors what your goals are and what help you desire. Listen to their answers, then select one that seems to fit their experiences to achieving your goals. If you find that the first lesson doesn't make sense, even after asking some questions and practicing, then maybe that isn't the right instructor for you.

Do not be alarmed if your first lesson results in a step or two backward. To go forward, one often has to unlearn an old habit, and assimilating something new will take some time. Very few people have instant lesson gratification.

On this site, there are instructional videos as well as some information on the TPI programs. They can also be helpful (or, better yet, find a TPI-certified instructor!).

Very few high-level golfers are purely self-taught. Don't be afraid of seeking advice, but don't get advice from more than one person as it will likely be confusing and perhaps contradictory.

You'll know when you and an instructor 'click'. Good fortune achieving your goals!

Hey Boone! Ive coached HS golf for 15 years. I respect your honesty and wish you the best. I think its impressive your a 7 handicap. No matter what age we are, we all want some more speed!

If youre looking for speed its really gonna be a combination of things. It will depend on your physical strength and stature for sure, so as you grow youll gain strength and speed. As a golfer, I imagine you dont want to just wait to "grow" - so you can get into some physical fitness and flexibility to help you there.

Its also going to be dependent on equipment, which i know not every HS kid has acces to a lot of the technology and or clubs but you obviously have some measuring device to get the ball speed - you can look around and see which type of ball is fastest for you, mixed in with being in the right shaft and driver head - but again i know thats not always possible.

Then you can find things like over speed training with speed sitx or the stack, among others. Where you can follow a program and gain clubhead speed through that. The idea is to train your body to swing fast, but you want to make sure you can keep the ball in play too!

And of course, whats definitely want to seek out coaching, whether its your HS coach or a PGA professional. Getting a lesson and fininding ways in your set up and swing to gain some speed. Good luck!

Suggest you go see a PGA golf instructor. A qualified teacher/instructor needs to take a look a your set-up, swing and follow-thru. Giving you an opinion would be like trying to fix your car engine online.

With your game, it should not take long to get you what you are looking for with the right instruction.

You say you are a high school golfer. If you play on the high school team, have you talked to the coach at the school?
