I’ve got the big 70 coming up and my wife suggested a trip to Ireland to celebrate the milestone. I’m second generation with all 4 of my grandparents being from West Cork. I’ve never been to Ireland so it’s definitely a bucket list item.

Any thoughts on where to play and stay in the southwest part of the country? I’m looking for mid tier pricing. I’ll probably play one”bucket list” course.

    Thanks

The (expensive) tours will include Ballybunion and Lanich. Pick your bucket list course early as they tend to book out early. Adair Manor is the next Ryder Cup but it requires a stay and the price is 4 stars.

A few years ago my wife and I played the west coast and avoided the high ticket courses Galway Bay and Carney Gol Club were 2 modest links courses we enjoyed. Galway Bay is not far from Shannon. Carney is quite a hike but Tom Coyne (A Course called Ireland) calls it his favorite Irish course). Worth checking his book.

I’m 4th generation and we’ve traced my heritage to 10 km NNW of Blarney County Cork). Visited the patch of farmland identified by Ancestry this past summer. After the European Club on the east coast, i didn’t play golf along the south and southwest. Visiting woolen mills and other forms of sightseeing was my penance for golf since my wife no longer plays.

Consider flights to Shannon if you want stay close to the SW of Ireland

Been to Ireland numerous times for golf....you can't go wrong with Ballybunion, Lahinch or Waterville. Those are some high tier course.
Be sure to stop and see the Cliffs of Moher....spectacular!!
The Ring of Kerry is absolutely beautiful.

    Enjoy your trip Mike!
  5. Jerry M,
You can't go wrong with the southwest of ireland for gold, food, culture and scenery.

In terms of one bucket list course I'd recommend the old head in Kinsale. Very playable and visually spectacular. Kinsale town is a hidden gem in ireland.

If Cork is your location another option is Fota island just outside Cork city. Lovely course and hosted the irish open on a few occasions.
Some of the more recognized course such as launch and ballybunnion have already been mentioned and they are also phenomenal courses. I'd would put doonbeg in the mix also and would have it ahead of launch in my view.
Depending on where you base yourself there are w other courses in county Kerry that can't be overlooked
Have not had the pleasure of playing them but anyone who has regarded them highly. They are Tralee and Waterville.
    Enjoy the trip
